ERGONOMIC CHAIR PROS:
- You can find lots of favorable online reviews proclaiming the effectiveness of many different styles & brands.
- Usually feel pretty good.
- Easy to use.
- Some are relatively inexpensive.
ERGONOMIC CHAIR CONS:
- Only works while being used correctly. It's still quite possible to slouch when sitting in one if you don't focus on your posture.
- Doesn't permanently retrain/rebalance postural muscles to permanently correct poor posture.
I recently upgraded my computer chair to a fully ergonomic model. I used to slouch terribly in my old chair so I considered the $500+ (yeah I know, not as much as some, but still not too shabby) that I spent on my new chair an investment in my health & posture. When I brought my chair home, I had all the best intentions in mind, I would adjust everything perfectly & begin to sit at my computer properly, according to all the rules. I lasted about 3 hours after that I was back to my old slouching ways.

Why BODY-ALINE is Better for Your Posture:
Most ergonomically designed chairs are superior to standard (flat back) chairs for assuring good posture while sitting. Think of the difference between sitting in an ergonomically-designed chair that contours to your spine versus the straight back of a church pew (bench) or the 'no-back' of bleachers. Therefore, we absolutely recommend them to be used in conjunction with the BODY-ALINE.
Although the contoured/ergonomic design of ergonomic chairs helps to reinforce good posture (when they are used properly, as in sitting all the way back into the chair), ultimately, they do not correct the muscular imbalances that cause poor posture. Therefore, they are not complete posture solutions. We recommend using the BODY-ALINE to permanently retrain your postural muscles, then buy one of these types of chairs to help reinforce your good posture while sitting. This will help maintain the muscle re-balancing the BODY-ALINE has achieved.
Also, keep in mind, you don't have to spend a great deal of money. Simply find a chair with middle of the road pricing that, most importantly, feels right to you. Understand, everyone's body is different. So a chair that feels right to someone else may not be the best fit for you. Take your time & try out several different sizes & styles, then allow your personal comfort to guide your buying decision. Ask yourself the following question:
Does this particular chair comfortably promote my good posture? If yes, then go for it. You may find several that do.
Once again, if you're committed to owning good ergonomic sitting - we agree, but there's no point in overspending if it means you can't have a BODY-ALINE as well. You should set a budget that enables you to have them both. Many have asked the question: Do ergonomic chairs really work for posture? This analysis summarizes why, in our opinion, the BODY-ALINE is a better overall posture solution compared to even the best ergonomic office, living room & kneeling chairs for posture.
A Personal Review of Ergonomic Chairs for Posture from Robert Gearhart JR., Co-inventor of the BODY-ALINE...
"Ergonomic chairs can be highly effective for aligning your spine when used properly and I really encourage you to use them. But don't expect them to single-handedly correct your posture - because they won't. You need targeted exercise to do this. Similar to a brace, the job of these chairs is merely to 'form' your spine into proper alignment while using them and they can do so quite admirably, which is why ergonomic chairs and the BODY-ALINE are a perfect combination. I'm sitting in a $150 model right now as a matter of fact. I've had 5 good years with it and plan on having 5 more..."
