BACK EXERCISE MACHINES PROS:
- Very easy-to-use.
- Effective for strengthening the muscles that run vertically along each side of the spine (spinal erectors) .
BACK EXERCISE MACHINES CONS:
- Only addresses one group of posture muscles, which is usually not sufficient to achieve posture realignment.
- Easy to injure yourself without using proper form (ie hyperextending your back).
The exercise pictured above (back extension) puts the spine in a hyperextended position which is very problematic for the vertebrae – the bones of the spine. The friction developed as parts of the vertebrae rub against one another during this motion can eventually result in back spasms and debilitating pain.

Why BODY-ALINE is Better for Your Posture:
Back exercise machines are sufficient for strengthening back muscles providing you can do the swinging motion without hyperextending your back, and you must also be able to handle the increased blood pressure to your head, which can cause headaches for some. However, the BODY-ALINE strengthens your back from a much safer, and more comfortable, seated position AND retrains ALL the major postural muscles of your upper body including the upper back, chest & shoulders - not just the muscles in your lower back. Therefore, the BODY-ALINE provides a more complete & total posture solution compared to common back strengthening machines, which only target the erector spinae group.
A stronger back, which these machines provide, is integral for having good posture but it's really only half the good posture equation. In other words, you can strengthen your back muscles 5 fold but it if you don't realign the rest of your postural muscles as well, your spine will still migrate forward. This analysis summarizes why, in our opinion, the BODY-ALINE is a better overall posture solution compared to the best back exercise machines for posture & strength.
A Personal Review of Back Strengthening Exercise Equipment for Posture from Robert Gearhart JR., Co-inventor of the BODY-ALINE...
"Even though you have to be really careful with form to avoid hyper-extending your spine (curving it too far rearward), there is nothing wrong with most of back exercise equipment found in gyms and home gyms. They WILL strengthen your low back muscles. However, they don't do anything to re-balance the rest of your postural muscles. Therefore, it is entirely possible to have a really strong lower back AND still have rounded shoulders from a weak upper back at the very same time. The BODY-ALINE gives you the exact same benefit of these commercial back strengthening pieces of equipment by providing up to 200lbs of spring-loaded exercise tension to strengthen your low back muscles AND it realigns the rest of the important postural muscles, as well. Plus, you get a soothing foam roller spinal massage. If you're looking to buy back exercise equipment for your posture - it may help, but the BODY-ALINE provides a total posture solution with a much higher degree of effectiveness for correcting posture. Try it and see."
